Custom Pergolas & Pavilions
Extend your outdoor living space with a custom-built pergola or pavilion. Pressure-treated, cedar, and composite options.
Outdoor Structures Built to Last
A pergola or pavilion transforms a plain backyard into a defined outdoor room. SKJ Builders constructs freestanding and attached pergolas and pavilions with footings set below the Binghamton frost line (42″) so they don’t rack or lean season to season.
Pergola vs. Pavilion
- Pergola: Open lattice roof — shade, partial cover, great for climbing plants
- Pavilion: Solid roof — full weather protection, usable in rain
Materials
- Pressure-treated lumber (most affordable, long-lasting)
- Cedar (natural look, resists rot and insects)
- Composite (low maintenance, color-stable)
Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need a permit for a pergola in NY?
Freestanding pergolas under 200 square feet often do not require a permit in most NY municipalities. Larger structures or those attached to the house typically do. SKJ Builders checks permit requirements before starting every project.
How long do pergolas last?
Pressure-treated pergolas last 20 to 30 years. Cedar pergolas last 15 to 25 years with minimal maintenance. Composite pergolas last 30 to 50 years with virtually no maintenance. All SKJ pergolas are set on concrete footings below the 42-inch NY frost line.
What is the difference between a pergola and a pavilion?
A pergola has an open lattice or slatted roof providing partial shade. A pavilion has a solid roof providing full weather protection. Both can be freestanding or attached to a house.
